The Iceni Botanical Artists (IBA) are a group of artists based in East Anglia. The members use a wide range of styles, techniques and mediums to depict the plant world, as well as striving for botanical excellence. Their aim is to promote the creation and enjoyment of botanical art and illustration. Some of their members have work held in National collections at Kew and the Royal Horticultural Society.

Each year the IBA have one or two exhibitions, usually in Norfolk, Suffolk or Cambridgeshire. This year they are proud to be able to exhibit in the Lady Chapel for the first time, as part of the Cathedral’s year to celebrate the life of Queen Etheldreda. The theme of the exhibition will reflect her life in flowers and plants, the recently planted Ely Physic Garden, and Harvest Festival celebrations.

All the work exhibited will be for sale, as well as cards, prints, and an IBA 2024 calendar. Two workshops will be held during the exhibition for those interested in learning about botanical art, or for the more experienced to refine existing skills. St Mary’s Exhibition, Comberton: I said goodbye to The Shires (Artist Code 1517)

Said goodbye to this one of a pair over the weekend (18-20 November 2022). The art and craft exhibition at St Mary’s Church, Comberton was the best yet. The standard of work was exceptionally good and the whole experience was such a pleasure.

I would like to thank everyone who visited the exhibition, and an especial thank you to everyone who purchased my artwork, jigsaw puzzles, cards, calendars, and diaries. (And not forgetting all those other people who purchased other artist’s works and wares – to you also on their behalf a great big thank you.) But most of all a big thank you to the organisers of the exhibition and their little helpers, who made it all happen – all very much appreciated.

My next, and last exhibition for 2022 is the Christmas Fair at the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust headquarters at The Manor House, Broad Street, Cambourne CB23 6DH on Friday 2nd December, 3.00pm to 7.00pm. I hope you can make it – it will be a sort of Black Friday price gig!!!!

Final Painting for 2021 – Picture Story

After an indifferent year for all of us, it seemed fitting for me to end the year with a final painting story. I hope you enjoy the picture film I have put together of a painting which was begun in 2007 and eventually completed 30 December 2021!

New Painting started: Artist Code 2017 “I Bow to my Queen”

I was fortunate enough to be commissioned to portray the beautiful turtle dove for a “birders” 80th birthday—being his favourite bird. The commissioner contacted me on a Monday when the birthday was the next Saturday. In that short time, all I could produce was a graphite drawing, see bottom of this post.

I was much taken with the beauty of these birds so have decided to use my preliminary sketch from that commission to produce a water colour painting. Heart on sleeve, I shall post progress as and when. Below is my preliminary drawing which today (Sunday 29 November 2020) I have just transferred onto my lovely Aquarelle Arches cotton rag paper ready to paint…. (pencil lines have been enhanced so that you can see it better).

Resources for this work are my own photographs taken at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve in Norfolk a few years ago. The doves and other wild fowl, including Bearded tits/reedlings (painting already done of these), were in a very large aviary, and the birds were acting as near-normal as can be in such circumstances. Ruffs were cavorting, and the male turtle doves were parading—hence the title. The background is a sawn tree-stump surrounded by wood anemones taken in Switzerland a few years ago (but which could easily be in Britain, so I am using it!).
